Traditional furniture like a chair in a space designed for contemporary styles may trigger interest but appear out of place. Similarly a modern couch in a space designed for traditional style will appear out of place.

When looking for furniture for a home, every home owner will look for furniture that matches the home’s décor. Shopping for furniture can be a little bit overwhelming with lots of designs and stunning pieces on offer in the market. Some home owners seek the help of interior designers while others just know what they need for their house. Normally furniture has two broad categories- traditional and contemporary furniture. Each category belongs to a different interior design class. All such categories are all too clear for an interior designer but for most of us furniture is just furniture. It is important to know a few differences between the two kinds as each has its own characteristics and charm.

Traditional furniture

This kind is associated with styles such as those of William and Mary and Queen Anne. The style emphasizes on elaborate carving and emphasis as well as signature looks. They tend to have century furniture pieces that offer elegance and romance. Pieces of furniture such as chairs have features such as turned legs, arched backs and rolled arms. Table legs pretty match resemble matching legs often with elaborately trimmed legs. Upholstered furnishings such as sofas often have large, dominant footings.

Contemporary furniture

This kind is often subtle and urban in its appeal. The styles have their own characteristics charm and attractions. They are the complete opposite of traditional furniture. They have clean lines with soft edges with chair legs and arms either square or round. They make up most of the modern couches that most of us have in our houses with tables having little carvings and inlaid patterns. The furniture is normally low to the ground with squared arms. The backs are not arched as with traditional furniture rather they are tufted with huge, fabric-covered buttons. Upholstery fabrics tend to be one solid color or have a subtle pattern. Home owners should consider a few factors when choosing pieces of furniture for their homes.

Time frame: Traditional furniture can be associated with the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s while contemporary furniture comprises the modern style furniture that followed that time.

Misconceptions: Traditional furniture is not usually oversized and overbearing. Modern day traditional furniture has softer curves, elaborate patterns and restricted carvings. They tend tuned to the 21st century lifestyle.

Considerations: Normally traditional furniture does not blend well with contemporary furniture. Traditional furniture suits traditional styles while contemporary furniture suits the modern style.
