As Good as New ? How to Repaint Your Metal Railing

Posted by Diego on February 24th, 2016

Metal railing can add an elegant and artistic touch to your stairs, balconies, decks, and other such installations. They’re resilient, good looking, and can withstand all kinds of wear and tear. However, over time, the wear begins to show and the finish of your railing starts to become dull and chipped. In such cases, you don’t really need to replace the railing. In fact, unless the integrity of the metal is completely compromised, you can easily refinish the metal. So if you need your metal railings in Boston to be repainted, you should follow the process listed below.

 Clean

It’s a good idea to clean the railing of any dust and debris before you start working on it. We recommend this because you’ll be able to see any areas of rust clearly and will be able to spot problems more easily. You can simply dust the railings and remove the layer of dirt. We don’t recommend washing it just before you start working on it.

Remove Rust

The next step is to remove rust from the surface. It’s very important to be as through as possible. If you leave rust on the metal railings in Massachusetts, the metal underneath your new paint would continue to develop rust and become fragile. You can use a wire brush to thoroughly remove the rust and the coat of old paint from the railing. That would ensure that the coat of primer and paint would adhere to the surface better.

After you’ve removed the rust and the old paint with the wire brush, you should give the railing a thorough scrub with a medium-grit sanding sponge. This would remove all the debris from the railing and allow the primer and the paint to adhere better to the metal. After you’re done, use a thick, dry rag to wipe the railing. Now it’s ready for primer.

Apply Primer

In areas where you have bare metal and where affected by rust, you need to apply a thorough coating of rust-inhibitive primer. That would ensure that the metal underneath doesn’t fall prey to the problem. If you want an even coat of the primer, you can use a spray can.

Paint

After the primer is dry, all you need to do is apply a coat of paint on you metal railings in Boston. You can ensure an even spread if you use spray paint instead of the normal roller or brush.

As you can see, refinishing your metal railing is very easy. You might be able to accomplish it over the course of a weekend.
