Is a Permit Necessary to Reroof Your Home?

It is often asked if a roofer will need to obtain a roofing permit to do roofing work on a home. Roofing permits should absolutely be obtained, but not all roofers will necessarily get them. Roofers could skip getting a permit, but this could cause a big problem if a city inspector happens to pass by your home while the roofer is up there completing the work. If the city inspector asks for the roofing permit and a permit was never obtained, all work on your home can be shut down until the permit is acquired.
 
Although this may not sound like a huge deal, it most certainly will be a big deal if the inspector happened to show up after your old roof has been removed and before the roofer has started putting the new roof on. That would leave your home without a roof until a permit is obtained.  You can save yourself a great deal of stress by simply having the roofer obtain the permit before any roofing work is started.
 
Another benefit of acquiring a roofing permit is to ensure that your roofing job will be completed correctly and up to code. Each city has different requirements, but typically, there will be between two to four inspections involved with a roofing project.  This offers homeowners a sense of security in knowing that their new roof is going to be completely safe.
 
If you are thinking about doing work on your roof, you really should give yourself the most protection and make sure that a roofing permit is obtained prior to the start of the work. Also, before you give your roofer their final payment, you should be sure to contact the city and verify that your permit was finalized and that there were not any building code problems.
