Types of location-based applications

GPS-based applications use your phone location to allow you to get directions from A to B, find the place, connect with someone, and so on. GPS technology is a powerful tool for marketing products and services. And before you learn how to make a GPS-based app, it’s worth finding out the types of applications that are using GPS. 

 

  1. Mapping and Navigation applications. A prominent example of such an app is Google Maps. They allow to find the location and build a route from A to B.

  2. Check-in and review applications. Apps like Foursquare and TripAdvisor are here. These apps allow you to check-in when you are at a definite place and leave a review about it. 

  3. Ecommerce apps. These apps allow you to shop online and pick up your purchase in-store. A good example of such an apps is Curbside.

  4. Coupon and advertising apps. These allow getting coupons, discounts, and special offers while you are in store. GeoCouponsAlert and Zomato are from this category. 

  5. Ridesharing and taxi apps. A good example is Uber. 

  6. Weather apps. They deliver weather and forecasts based on your location. 

  7. Dating apps. A prominent example is Tinder. 

  8. Apps for travelers. These are hospitality, public transport, and services apps. 

  9. Social media apps. Facebook and Instagram for example allow you to add the location to your posts.
