I remember when I first started learning how to speak Jamaican Patois and I listened to Sean Paul\'s first album Stage One almost everyday. In the song, \"Haffi Get de Gal Ya\", Sean Paul says \"Mi haffi mek a try, Haffi get a bligh\". Although the song contains many great vocabulary words and phrases, this phrase was immediately cataloged into my Jamaican Patois language database. As a result of hearing this song, I added a new phrase to my patois and heard a native speaker pronouncing the phrase.

The important thing is that once you hear a phrase or key vocabulary word, use it. You must go out and speak Jamaican Patois with someone, preferably a native speaker, because that will help build your confidence, fluency and overall dominance of the language.

One final thought is that music also opens your understanding of Jamaican culture. So many times, languages, words and culture can be found in music, especially in reggae videos. For example, the Damian Marley song \"Welcome to Jamrock\" was a huge success, but for the student of Jamaican Patois and Culture, it gave a raw glimpse into life in Jamaica and a great resource for hearing the language pronounced at a comfortable speed.
