Larimar also known as the "Atlantis Stone" or "Stefilia's Stone," is a unique and captivating gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic. Its name is a combination of "Larissa," the daughter of a local discoverer, and "mar," the Spanish word for sea, reflecting its connection to the Caribbean waters.

The story of Larimar's discovery begins in 1916 when a Dominican Republic-born Spanish priest, Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, reported finding blue pectolite stones in a mountainous region near the city of Barahona. However, due to various circumstances, the finding didn't gain much attention at the time, and Larimar remained relatively unknown.

It wasn't until 1974 when Miguel Méndez, a Dominican Republic's local artisan and Peace Corps volunteer, stumbled upon Larimar again while exploring a river bed in the Bahoruco Range. Recognizing its beauty and potential, Méndez and a local Dominican geologist, Norman Rilling, began to investigate the stone further, collecting samples and promoting its unique qualities.

Larimar's distinctive blue color, ranging from light sky blue to deep turquoise, is attributed to the presence of copper within the mineral. The stone often features intriguing patterns resembling waves, clouds, or even the ocean itself, adding to its allure.

As news of the rare blue stone spread, Larimar quickly gained popularity among gemstone enthusiasts, metaphysical practitioners, and jewelry designers worldwide. Its association with the Caribbean Sea and its calming blue hues contributed to its reputation as a stone of tranquility, promoting relaxation, emotional healing, and spiritual connection.

The mining of Larimar remains relatively challenging due to its remote location and limited accessibility within the Bahoruco Range. The stone is typically extracted from narrow veins within the volcanic rock, making it a precious and sought-after gemstone.
