One of the necessary materials for this job is the solder paste. Solder paste is a combination of fusible metal alloy, commonly used while creating joints during the manufacturing of printed circuit boards.  The purpose of solder paste is to hold certain components of electronics together, while making sure that the surface mount components are bound properly to the circuit board. Solder paste is essential for thermal and electrical connections, too. Solder paste comes in different kinds, and lead solder paste is one of the commonly used products. •    Why lead? - Some manufacturers may prefer to use lead solder paste because it suits the product’s application. Equipment and machinery for aerospace industries and the military may require tin-lead paste. It is cost-effective for products that must be mass produced, too. Moreover, it is preferred for soldering applications which require good print volume repeatability.

•    It can be used for many different applications – Lead solder paste can be used in assembling the printed circuit boards of handheld electronic devices like tablets and smartphones. It is used for the PCB assembly of consumer electronic products, computer motherboards, medical equipment, automotive systems, and network servers, too.

•    What it looks like – Solder paste is typically sold in tubes or jars, and refrigeration or storing in a cool, dry place is recommended to prolong its shelf life. The consistency of the paste is similar to the frosting or icing of a cake, and it can easily be spread with proper tools.

•    Storage tips – Lead solder paste must be kept at low temperatures to minimize the rate of oxidation and to reduce the degradation rate of the flux. However, be sure that the temperature is not below freezing. Follow the storage directions usually added to the labels of solder paste containers. Avoid using the paste once it has reached its end date. Expired or old lead solder paste can result in defective PCB assembly, and may cost you time and money reworking and replacing the products.
