Almost all of the businesspersons and people sitting at high positions in the government sue the assistance of secretaries, who supervise all of their daily official activities. Most of the times, secretaries are required to prepare notes based on the orders or recommendations of their bosses in real time. If they start writing all the notes, it will take a lot of time if many notes or orders have to prepared. So, these notes can be taken in shorthand, a kind of symbolic language, and later on interpreted to prepare them properly. As English is a very rich language, different types of shorthand training courses and techniques have been developed to make it easy for people to learn them.

In designing English language shorthand symbols, the most confusing part was to develop them for words that have same phonetic sounds. One of the example is that the sound ‘sh’ can be spelt in around 13 different ways. Similarly, there are many spellings that have same vowel sounds. So, a single symbol was adopted for same phonetic sounds while developing the shorthand techniques. Based on this methodology, Pitman Shorthand was developed by Sir Isaac Pitman in 1837. It is based on sketching geometrical curves and lines in different lengths and angles to represent different words. Each word can be sketched in a distinctive way with a special fountain pen or a simple pencil. Pitman shorthand is a completely phonetic but includes diacritical marks in the lines to indicate vowels. This system is considered the best shorthand technique till date.

During earlier times, when electronic communication was not so developed, journalists and reporters make use of shorthand to write notes during an interview or press conference. So, another type of shorthand technique known as Teeline shorthand system was developed that includes written outlines and short-term memory taken from consonants and their combinations. It is a faster way of writing notes than Pitman shorthand but, comes with much complications. However, it can still be learned easily by attending a course and practicing it daily.
