What is bubble tea? If you have not encountered this popular popping boba product, chances are you’ll soon encounter it at your local tea shop. This is a tea-based drink that has been infused with chewy tapioca balls, also known as Pearls or Boba; at the bottom. While this treat finds its origin in Taiwan, it has grown tremendously over the last few decades and is now a favorite for most people across the globe.

What Are Boba Calories?

Living in a world where people are more conscious about what they consume and the impact it could have on their health, one of the most frequently asked question is: what are boba calories? Well, this is both a simple and tricky question to address. To begin with, it’s crucial to understand that the calories in boba will majorly depend on how one chooses to order it. Therefore, this is one question that can best be addressed once the consumer has determined their favorite flavor and they prefer it served.

Yet again, one question still lingers in the minds of most consumers that are experiencing this tea drink with tapioca balls. Is boba vegan?

Boba For Vegans

It is unlikely that anyone will encounter a single boba product that is specifically meant for vegans. Nonetheless, when you scrutinize the composition of Boba itself, you will fathom that it is vegan in nature. Boba is basically made from tapioca.

But What Is Tapioca?

This is nothing close to rocket science, though it may sound so. It is simply a starch made from the root of cassava. Are you one of the many compassionate boba addicts? Well, you can rest assured that boba tea does not have any gelatin in it. Gelatin is a stabilizing compound, often extracted from the tendons, ligaments, bones and skins of animals such as cows, fish and pigs. You now know that having strawberry Boba yoghurt is not vegan.

Many times, gelatin is used to stabilize and thicken yoghurt. Therefore, when yoghurt is served with boba toppings, it ceases being vegan since it has an animal product. But be sure to note that boba itself is vegan, and when used in tea based drinks, it maintains its vegan qualities and can be used by any vegan person out there. However, when the tea is made using milk products, it again stops being a vegan choice. Oftentimes, a vegan cream is offered in the place of milk.
