3 Ways To Safe Money In The Food Department

Posted by The Gorgeous List on February 19th, 2020

Often, the biggest expense in our budget lies in the food department. It can be super easy to go overboard with the food we buy when getting groceries, and the takeout we impulsively get when we are out and about.

Thankfully, there are things you can do to help slow down some of that and have more finances to put towards savings. One thing to note is that saving money doesn't mean you have to deprive yourself from eating all the things you love. True, dialing down on getting takeout might be part of the solution, but that doesn't mean you can't have a decent home made meal for a fraction of the cost most nights out of the week. Here are a few ways how:

Meal Prep

Meal prepping has soared in popularity lately, and for good reason. With soaring prices everywhere and not so much soaring wages, we're forced to find ways to create healthy home cooked meals that don't cost a ton and are easy on your health.

Meal prepping is a great way to do this, because you save yourself from having to step into the kitchen and creating a meal from scratch. Instead what you do is you batch make your meals and you keep them in the fridge for when you get hungry. This way you save on food waste, and there is less of a chance you're tempted for takeout. It's most definitely worth a try.

Try Vegan Dinner Options

No, this doesn't mean you have to become one or that you're all of a sudden labeled a vegan if you don't want to be. But the amount of money you can save by leaving out meat from your meals a few times a week can be notable.

All you have to do is look up delicious vegan dinner recipes to start gathering ideas for your next few meals. A little bit of planning can go a long way.

Create Homemade Filling Snacks

Yet another way to save money on food is to create your own homemade snacks. Chia pudding, for example, can be a great way to do that. It's the easiest snack to make, it's incredibly nutritious for you, and it doesn't cost a ton to create and put away for a few times a week. The next time you want to reach for something to snack on, try keeping a jar of chia seed pudding or two in your fridge. You'll be glad you took the time on Sunday afternoon to take care of it when you had the time. Because let's face it. Life can be hectic and it doesn't have to be that way. You can create your own systems to own your life, get it together, make the progress you want to be making, and be happy.

Hopefully these ideas help you take care of your finances better and inspires you to take action. There are always a ton more ways to save money on your grocery bill. But this is just the start.
