You Can Make You Own Earring Hooks

The centerpiece of almost all earrings is the earring hooks. With attractive earring hooks, you can design an outstanding attractive pair of earrings, in any style that you desire. With a very simple method of constructing them, you can have an unlimited amount of variation in any style that you need. The only limit is your imagination and creativity.

To make your own earring hooks, you will need a pair of flat nose pliers, cutters, needle nose and round nose pliers for handling the wire. The best wire for making your own these hooks should be no more than 1 mm in diameter. It is easy to handle, and sturdy enough to resist breaking. Your choice of metal is up to you as you can choose any that you prefer, but you should remember that precious metals are relatively expensive, and metal plated wire may be a better alternative.

The first step is to cut length of the wire that you measure. Try not to estimate, as waste can be produced if the wire is too long or too short. For your earring hooks, you will at least 5 cm, and to smooth the ends of the wire, they should gently file or you can use a fine grade of sandpaper.

Lay the sandpaper on a flat surface and rub the end of the wire in a circular motion with a gentle amount of pressure. Alternatively, you can use a file, which is held in one hand, and firmly rubbed on the ends of the wire.

Make a loop at the end of the wire using the round nose pliers. The loop will be used for hanging the pendants that you wish to include in your earrings; you should avoid having any sharp edges, which will easily cut the surface. Use the needle nose pliers to hold the length of wire, and using the fingers of the other hand you can shape your earring hooks.

While bending the wires into the shape desired, you can find out if the ends are smooth enough by touching them with the surface of your fingertips. They should be smooth to the touch.

Repeat the process as accurately as possible if you are making a pair of earring hooks, ensuring that you use the same lengths of wire and the same positions on the pliers. You can compare the hooks and make any adjustments that may be necessary.

Some care should be exercised when choosing wire for earring hooks, as some people may have some sensitivity to metal. One of the preferences is for using silver plated surgical steel which is often labelled as hypo-allergenic. The term indicates that the metal may be less likely to produce allergic reactions.

You can buy a lot of earring hooks online, but you find that you will appreciate the experience and perhaps have more fun if you make them yourself. There may be several disadvantages to buying these hooks online, as a minimum order quantity is need and the minimum quantity is often much more than you may need.

It may be more fun to make your own earring hooks than to purchase them. The earring hooks that you need, will depend on the type and style of earrings.
