Videoconferencing refers to the groupware technology and the modern trend catching up for the conduct of meetings of a vast mass of persons at different locations through real time two way digital compression of both video streams and audio streams. This intermediary form of video telephony is different from videophone calls. It has the origin dating back to 1968, when multiple user videoconferencing was first demonstrated and the low cost but high capacity broadband telecommunication, powerful computing processors and advanced video compression techniques have made this technology being used in the fields of medicine, media, education and business.

The principal benefit of video conferencing solutions lies in the reduction of substantially travelling time and costs and indirectly resulting in the reduction of global warming; other benefits include savings in stationery (since the proceedings and presentations of the documents will be captured in the computer systems), then again leading to reduction of global warming, increase in the productivity of the employees in the office, since they can attend the conference just at the time of its start, remaining in office. The latest technology is cloud based videoconferencing, which can be used even without the hardware normally involved in other video conferencing systems. They can handle even 3D video broadcasting. They can integrate mobile calls, VoIP and other types of video calling, including the video recording capability to archive the proceedings of the conference.

Video conferencing systems comprise various components for video and audit inputs/ outputs. They broadly are video camera/ webcam, coder/ decoder (called technically as codec), which may be hardware or even software, microphones or CD/ DVD players, computer monitor or televisions or projector, loudspeakers, audio modems, LAN or Internet and a computer.

The two kinds of Video conferencing systems are dedicated systems (with subgroups as large group, small group and individual) containing a console, i.e. package of various components synchronized into a single equipment with a video camera, remote controlled and desktop systems, being add-ons to normal personal computers.

Though the meetings are held among at remote areas (even among the mobile persons), the quality will be such that the members of the conference will not feel that they are at different destinations for one-to-one eye contact can be established.

Latest technology and equipment will take care of all video conferencing solutions by creating the feeling as if the conference is held in a hall among the real persons (though you discuss with the visual images of the remote participants). All the components in the system will be seamlessly integrated and compatible with any desktop/ mobile phones from WiFi/ 3G/4G networks. While implementing the system for your purposes, you make a study of the whole system, compare different solutions by different vendors, including the after sales service and the initial and recurring costs.
