How to Plan and Organize a Household Move

You’ve done the most challenging part, you found somewhere to move after countless hours of searching. Then, the realization that now you have to move into your new home has settled deep in the pit of your stomach, and you begin to wonder how to accomplish such a daunting task.

As laborious and exciting as moving sounds, there are steps you can take to organize and plan it accordingly without getting overwhelmed. Take a look at some of these tips for a way to streamline the process.

To-Do List

One of the most important lists of your life is the to-do list you’ll make when the moving process begins. Keep a notebook or designated place on your computers where all of your moving information will be stored, such as phone numbers and addresses. Start a list of everything you need to accomplish before the move, such as packing, calling for a rental truck, obtaining moving quotes, and others.

Budget it Out

Take a second to jot down how much you’re willing to spend on the move and how much you think everything will cost. If the two numbers don’t necessarily align, you may end up finding creative ways to save, such as finding free packing boxes and asking friends and family for assistance.

Change of Address

Don’t forget to complete one of the most crucial steps to moving, and that is changing your address. You can start this process a little early on, even before you’re at your new home. Stop by the post office to pick up a moving packet that will allow you to change your address there. In case you forget to change it somewhere, the post office will forward your mail to the correct place.

Find the Perfect Mover

As soon as you know the date of your move, start looking for the best movers to help you if you have room in your budget. The perfect mover will help you with the entire process, especially if you purchase the packing service along with moving. Don’t forget to ask as many questions as possible and check all the reviews out there so you can be sure you’ve found the right company to work with you on such an important day.

Start Packing

The packing process can seem scary and lengthy. Start as early as possible to make it more manageable, giving yourself the time to look through all of your belongings and pack away those that you need to bring with you. It’ll also give you the time to see if you can donate or toss some items you no longer need to simplify the move.

Pack a Kit

Set aside a bag with important documents and essentials which you’ll carry with you on the day of your move. This is especially helpful if you’re moving long distances and may be separated from the rest of your items if a moving company is relocating them. Include a change or two of clothes along with any moving documentation and identification.
