Poker Rules: Learning Poker Hand Rankings

Every game requires you to fulfil a criterion to win, and in poker games, this criterion is termed as poker hand rankings. Poker hands represent five-card combinations that you must make to win at the table. There are ten such combinations, and the rarer the hand you hold, the higher are your odds of winning. The strategies you use and the calculations you make all depend on the five cards you have. So, without further ado, let us go ahead and learn the ten poker hand combinations.

Royal Flush

The most premium of all poker hand combinations, as per poker hand rules, you must have the King, Queen, Ace, Jack and Ten of the same suits to have yourself the Royal Flush. This poker hand is the rarest and can always beat all other hands.

Straight Flush

At the second position, we have a hand that is almost always the guaranteed nuts because even the Royal Flush is a version of this combination. To hold the Straight Flush, you must have five cards in a sequence from the same suit as per poker card rules.

Four of a Kind

Concluding our top three poker hand combinations, we have the Four of a Kind, which is an excellent ranking that could help you power your way through tough tables. To have this hand, you must have four cards of the same rank.

Full House

Next in the list of poker hand order, we have the Full House - the combination of two other poker hands: The Three of a Kind and the Pair. To form this sequence, you must have two cards of the same rank paired up with three separate cards of the same rank.

Flush

Flushes are known to win you most regular games because while they are rare to find, they are not as rare as some of the top hands and yet manage to do the job effectively. To form the Flush, you need five cards from the same suit.

Straight

Straights are robust as they almost always win most regular games that you will be playing daily if you have five cards in consecutive order regardless of their suits, that gives you the Straight combination.

Three of a Kind

Much like the earlier discussed Four of a Kind, having three cards of the same rank will give you this combination.

Two Pair

As the name suggests, if you have two cards of the same rank along with two other cards of the same rank, that gives you the Two Pair.

Pair

If you have two cards of the same rank, that gives you the Pair hand combination that ranks only one step above the least profitable poker hand ranking.

High Card

Lastly, when neither of the sequences mentioned above is fulfilled, you get the High Card, which is a combination represented by the highest-ranking card among your five-card pile.
