A thorough analysis of PTE Exam Scorecard

PTE is a test organized by Pearson that checks your skills for the language. Most of the PTE aspirants out there are very well aware of the pattern of the PTE exam. However, many of you are not familiar with the scorecard of the PTE exam.

The Scorecard of the PTE Exam consists of two sections:

Communicative Skills

The communicative skills are the four sections of the exam-

  1. Speaking
  2. Writing
  3. Reading
  4. Listening

Enabling skills

In the PTE Exam, enabling skills to score the performance of the test taker in the Speaking and Writing section. The enabling skills include-

  • Oral Fluency
  • Pronunciation
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Written discourse

Speaking Section

The speaking section is the first section of the PTE exam. This section consists of five item types. These item types are scored on the Content, Oral Fluency, and Pronunciation. 

The test taker should always try to maintain a moderate pace while recording the response. You should not omit/skip, add/insert nor replace any word from the paragraph while recording the response. 

Writing Section

The writing section is the second section of the PTE exam. The section consists of 2 item types- Summarize Written Text & Write an Essay. The essay is of 20 minutes each; whereas, the Summarize written text is of 10 minutes each.

The scoring criteria for the writing section take into consideration the following:

Content, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and written discourse.

It is always advised to proofread the content before submission or clicking on the Next button.

Scores contribution in the PTE exam

Read Aloud

In this item type of the PTE Exam, the test taker has to read the given passage in a specified time frame. This item type is scored in the speaking section; however, its scores are contributed to the Reading section as well.

Repeat Sentences

In this item type, the audio will play for a specified time frame. After listening to the audio, the test taker has to repeat it as it is. The scores of the Repeat sentences is also contributed to the Listening section.

Retell Lecture

In this item type, audio of a lecture will play for a specified time frame. Based on the understanding, the test-taking has to narrate the lecture. It is necessary to mention all the key points from the lecture as well as to end it with a conclusion. The scores of the Retell lecture are contributed to the Listening section.

Answer short Question

In the PTE Exam, for this item type, you will hear audio with the question. The test taker has to answer in a word or a group of words. The scores of this item type are contributed to the Listening section.

Summarize Written Text

In this item type, you will get a passage that you have to summarize in a single sentence. You will get 10 minutes to read the passage and summarize it. In this PTE exam, its scores are contributed to the Reading section along with the Writing section.

Reading & Writing: Fill in the blanks

As the name suggests, the scores of the Reading & Writing: Fill in the blanks is contributed to Writing, as well as the Reading section.

Summarize Spoken Text

You will hear a paragraph/lecture that you have to sum up in 70 words. This item type assesses the listening skills of the candidate along with the writing skills; hence, the scores are contributed for both the sections.

Highlight Correct Summary

Although Highlight correct summary is an item type of the Listening section, the scores are contributed to the Reading section. The test taker will hear audio, based on your listening skill choose the correct option out of the multiple options present.

Highlight Incorrect Words

In this item type, you will hear audio, and a transcript of the same audio will be present on the screen. You have to listen carefully and match it with the transcript to highlight the incorrect words. Hence, its scores are contributed to the Reading section also.

Write from Dictation

This item type is similar to the Repeat Sentences only difference is you have to write what you heard. Also, the scores are contributed to the Writing section as well.
