Making Lifestyle Changes to Support Bariatric Surgery

Posted by Dr. Nick Nicholson on June 30th, 2014

Some people - certainly those who aren’t appropriately educated about bariatric surgery - consider weight loss surgery to be the “easy way out” of obesity. In truth, bariatric surgery is anything but the easy way out; it’s a journey to achieving and maintaining true weight loss that involves quite a bit of sacrifice and dedication. The surgery itself is only one part of the journey. And while it can be scary to undergo and uncomfortable during recovery, it is far less invasive than it was historically and involves much shorter recovery times than one would expect from what can essentially be a life-changing procedure.

However, when the surgery is over, this is when the real work begins. Weight loss surgery is far from a quick fix; it involves a complete commitment to changing your lifestyle in order be effective and sustainable. If you’re not completely committed to changing your life, then bariatric surgery may not be the choice for you.

So what lifestyle changes should you expect to make following your bariatric surgery?

  • Following surgery, you will initially be on a full liquid diet. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions to promote healing and prepare your body for your dietary changes.

  • Once solid food is permitted, you’ll be given a Post-Operative Diet that is specific to your particular surgical procedure. It is absolutely critical that you follow this initial diet to give your body the proper support to heal and allow you to lose the appropriate amount of weight.

  • Going forward, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions regarding protein intake and other food choices.

  • Your stomach will only be able to handle small amounts of food so it’s important to chew well and eat slowly. Listen to your body and stop eating before you feel full.

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day - sip 60 oz. of low or no calorie, non-caffeinated, non-carbonated beverages throughout the day but be sure to avoid drinking 30 minutes prior to your meal and for 30 minutes following your meal to avoid stretching your stomach.

In addition to food choices, life after bariatric surgery should also include a committed exercise program and the avoidance of alcohol and tobacco products.
