Cold vs. Warm Weather Concealed Carry

Posted by GunBroker.com on January 12th, 2021

If you plan on concealed carrying year-round but are new to it, you may not know the differences between how you carry in the cold months and the warm months. For example, it might be easy to carry a full-sized FNX 45 in the winter months, but not the warm months of the year. It is vital that you know the differences so that you do not print, have easy access to your firearm, and have the practice needed to draw smoothly in all conditions.

Work with Layers

First, work with the clothing you have. In the warmer months, you will want to wear a shirt and an overshirt, preferably untucked. This helps avoid printing or having part of the firearm stick out unnaturally from your clothes, as the overshirt is not too tight. This affords you some flexibility, but not as much as winter. In winter, layers of clothing can help you conceal your firearm, such as outside or inside the waistband, or even in a shoulder holster. However, they can also be harder to get to.

Practice with Jackets and Gloves

You need to put the time in to practice drawing and firing your gun in all weather conditions. If it’s the cold, rainy, snowy months, you could find yourself in the rain or snow. Too warm? You might be sweaty and have a more challenging time drawing. Take your Glock 21 Gen 4, put it in whichever holster you will use in a specific season, and practice. Then do the next season. Change clothes, wearing jackets or gloves, and practice. Can you draw with your large winter jacket on? Do you need to keep it unzipped? Practice with different sets of clothes and inside the waistband and outside.

IWB, OWB, or Off-Body?

Generally, inside the waistband, or IWB, is suitable for the summer, as it is easier to conceal with less clothing. Carrying outside the waistband is easier in the winter when larger clothing makes it easier to conceal. However, it can also be harder to access your firearm. You can also carry off-body, such as in a bag,

Full-Size vs. Compact vs. Ultracompact

As stated earlier, a larger, full-size firearm is easiest to conceal in the winter. You may want to switch to a compact or subcompact, such as a Glock 27 Gen 4, when it gets warmer. These are easier to have under just a layer or two of clothes and imprint less, not poking out. You will need to practice with all of the guns you intend on concealed carrying, as a subcompact Glock 27 Gen 4 fires much differently than a larger Glock 17. Practice makes perfect.
