While I was on my Wyoming retreat, I spent an afternoon by a remote lake. At one point, I looked throughout the lake to see a male fishing, with his pet dog at his side. The only sound I might hear was the serene lapping of water and the wild Wyoming wind.

Imagine a child finding out to walk. The child gets up and falls down. The parent allows the kid to fall but protects the child from falling down a cliff. In Phase 2, the manager becomes that practical parent.

As you can see in looking at the Teach and Release Design, the management and management functions run along a continuum. More management exists in the early stages and less in the latter stages where leadership surface areas. Who desires a supervisor who offers no direction from the outset? Who wants a leader who micro-manages a job you can do blindfolded?
