Disinfectants effectively kills or prevent the growth of microbial organisms

Disinfectants have long been used for the control of infection in many health care settings. Common methods of disinfection include the use of bactericidal chlorine for use in drinking water, the use of ozone for air cleaning, and many other techniques. They are essentially chemical agents intended to kill or prevent the growth of microbial organisms on nonporous surfaces. The technical term "disinfectant" describes a substance or agent that destroys living organisms by damaging their external surfaces and DNA structure. The most widely used disinfectants are those that act on the "friendly" bacteria or germ. Examples of these include alcohols, such as ethanol, benzene, and triclosan; chlorine bleach; and high-level (such as hydrogen peroxide). The use of antibiotics and other strong antimicrobial agents may also reduce the incidence of infection, but their effect on the organism's survival and ability to reproduce are not affected.

Disinfectants can be organic or inorganic. The organic compounds include carbolic acid, which is commonly used in disinfectants, and hydrogen peroxide, which is frequently added to disinfectants to increase their effectiveness against specific pathogenic microorganisms. Organic one include Listerine, which is derived from a bacteria found in nature; iodine, which occurs naturally in many food products; and methacrylic acid, which is a component of many plastic items. Organic one have not been shown to pose a health risk. On the other hand, inorganic one such as chlorine bleach and hydrochloric acid have been shown to cause a variety of health problems, particularly in people with pre-existing medical conditions or immunosuppressed states.
