Freezers How do they work?

A home without a freezer is something no one can imagine today. But, this is the equipment which often gets ignored most of the time. Freezer, as people generally think does not make things cold. It just removes the heat in the unit and freezes the items stored in it. This becomes possible because in this equipment, the heat gets evaporated. There are certain units which makes it happen. Its components include the following:

• Expansion valves,
• A compressing unit,
• A condenser,
• Metering unit.

The fundamental principle of the working of a freezers is evaporation. For instance, if you spray water on yourself on a hot day, it gets evaporated within no time. The same happens in a refrigerator.

1. The compressing unit receives the refrigerant and increases its air pressure. As a result, it becomes a liquid
2. This liquid starts flowing into the expansion valve. Here, the increased pressure in the air prevents it from evaporating. The refrigerant starts producing heat and becomes cooler.
3. The refrigerant which has become cool flows into the valve. Here, the pressure of the air is quite low when compared with the compressor. Consequently, it is prevented from evaporating. The liquid gets cold in the valve.
4. At this juncture, the thermostat springs into action. When the temperature becomes too low, the motor is stopped. This prevents the refrigerant from flowing. When it becomes too high, the motor is turned on restoring the flow of the refrigerant to the other units.

Different kinds of refrigerants were used in freezers. However, it is only after 1945 that scientists were able to discover Freon. This resulted in the mass production of refrigerators as one can see today. After a few years, researchers found out that this chemical caused extensive damage to the ozone layer in the atmosphere. Quite naturally, people started searching for eco-friendly refrigerants.  At present, the coolant used in most of the refrigerators available to buy today is pure ammonia.

The freezing unit in the equipment comes sealed to safeguard from exposure to the outside temperature. Do not ever try to see the coolant inside it. Freon and pure ammonia are quite toxic. Trying to see or handling it on your own may cause trouble.

When it comes to maintaining or troubleshooting, the best source of information is the product documentation. Make sure that you abide by the instructions given therein if at all you think of repairing the unit on your own. The best option is to call a service person if you see any damage.
