Is Using CARFAX a Good Idea?

We felt reasonably equipped to go out to face the dealers, and were tremendously surprised to find out we weren't. We had picked out the cars we wanted, but they (the dealers) had a different agenda.

We learned some things though. One of the things we learned about was CARFAX. Car Max gave us a free copy for each car we looked at. But researching online we had found some things about CARFAX.

A gentleman in another state had apparently accidentally purchased a stolen car even though he requested a CARFAX report on the car, CARFAX reported the title clean, when actually the car had been stolen. The Title of the car was branded restored and it reduced the value of the car 3 to 5000 dollars.

Another gentlemen ran a routine CARFAX on his car and an accident he knew he had reported was not listed on The CARFAX report.

There are many reasons why an accident may not be listed on a CARFAX report. Suppose the person who has the accident cannot afford a regular mechanic and has the car repaired by his best friend Joe down the road? Joe is not required to report the repair he did in his garage so the information is not reported to the DMV or the insurance companies that CARFAX gets their information from.

Checking Out a Used Car With a Carfax Report

Carfax is a mostly free service which gives you the opportunity to check the history of a used car before you purchase it. This ensures that you can purchase the best vehicle possible with the money that you have. The only information not included in a carfax are names, telephone numbers and address of past owners. The only instance that a carfax history may not be free is if you are purchasing not from a dealership but from a private person. This person may not want to include a free history so you can pay carfax for this.

The information can be found online or their website at carfax.com. A client can search for the car they want to purchase and the results will yield cars at various dealers that are associated with carfax. It enables you to read all the details about the vehicle of your choice online before going into the dealer store. Not only do they provide used car histories but they also provide a buy back feature where after a customer purchases a vehicle if it is found to be defective in a way that was not mentioned, Carfax will buy back the vehicle from them.

The services or reports offered by Carfax are not limited to history reports. They also do free lemon checks, record checks, recall checks and problem car alerts. A lemon check, seeks to find out if a vehicle was designated a manufacturer buy back. This check is done with the vehicle identification number (VIN). Record checks tell you how many vehicle history records are in the carfax report of your car. Information that can be found in this check includes; number of owners, service records, registration information among other things. A recall check provides information on open or unresolved safety recalls on your vehicle. A problem car alert allows you to get information about cars with Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) accidents, salvage titles, flood damage, and odometer rollbacks. These additional services do not provide the same quantity of information found in the history report.
