5 Limitations of Building a Website on WordPress

WordPress has grown to be one of the most used and most loved blog platforms in the web. In recent years, it has also become a top choice for managing content. Its easy to use Content Managing System (CMS) makes WordPress a widely used platform not only for personal blog sites but also for business sites, thanks to its simplicity and accessibility, open-source nature, cost-effectiveness, and Google-friendliness. This said, WordPress website may not always be the best way to go for a business, because just like many other website platforms, the system also has its limitations and disadvantages. While WordPress has established itself as a powerful blogging platform, it still has a long way to go and a big room for improvement when it comes to hosting business-oriented websites. The following are 5 of the biggest disadvantages and limitations of WordPress when it comes to building a website:

  • PHP security: WordPress has a substandard track record for PHP security. Depending on the level of sensitivity of your website content, this can be a huge issue, especially when developing a business website. Additionally, if you are not careful about the widgets and plugins that you install in your site, you may unknowingly inject virus and malware codes into your site, which will not only cripple your pages, but may also affect your computer as well. It is these types of security and technical issues that you should discuss with professional web designers, developers, and hosts if you wish to have a well-designed and adequately maintained website.
  • Design and branding: One of the biggest limitations of WordPress sites is their template-based designs, which can make your website look very cookie cutter. While templated websites are easier to use, this poses problems when it comes to branding, because it is much harder to make a business stand out when everyone else is using the same theme. While there are many different free and paid themes to choose from within the platform, it is still a challenge to stand out from the rest and customization is still within the limits of the WordPress framework.
  • Stability: Installing several plugins may slow your pages down, which can be detrimental to your traffic and website usability. On the other hand, limiting plug-ins may also limit the functionality of your site.
  • Constant updating: Websites do need regular maintenance. However, with WordPress being an open-source platform, it constantly needs regular updates. Upgrades, on the other hand, may make your previous plug-ins outmoded and incompatible with your newly updated site.
  • Additional costs for further customization: Adding style and other custom changes to your site may cost you more, yet you are not allowed to hide copyright information on the theme that you are using.
