Tips for Staying Positive during Cancer Treatments

Posted by Lewisvilleflower on November 10th, 2014

It’s often said that half the battle of fighting cancer involves staying positive during the course of treatments. While a great attitude certainly won’t replace the potential need for surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, it can make going through these steps much easier to endure. Maintaining a great attitude, however, is often easier said than done.

Fortunately, there are a number of things cancer patients and their families can do to help keep a positive outlook. Here are just a few tips to make that happen:

Insist on working with a doctor you have confidence in – Most insurances enable patients to pick and choose from a number of specialists. Take the time to review the options and even interview doctors. Ideally, you’ll want a doctor and practice that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Get educated – The Internet might not be the very best place to research the type of cancer you have. Instead, talk with your doctor and/or medical team to obtain educational materials about the type of cancer you have, the forms of treatment available and the steps that may be involved in the treatment process. The more informed you are and the better you understand what lies ahead, the less likely it is you will feel frightened, intimidated, or overwhelmed.

Get some support – Many oncology centers offer or can recommend support groups that can ease you through the treatment process. While it’s important to read what medical professionals have to say about your condition, it’s also enlightening to speak with people who have walked in your shoes. If you’re not comfortable in a support group session, be sure to talk to someone. A friend or family member might provide just the encouragement and support you need to stay strong.

Pamper yourself – Facing cancer of any kind can be taxing on the body and spirit. Take time out to exercise, eat right, get plenty of rest, and work on ways to reduce stress. Many doctors recommend alternative forms of treatment to coincide with cancer treatments. They might include meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, aromatherapy, and massage therapy.

While a positive attitude alone won’t cure cancer, it can make a difference in the process.
