Tips to make the most out of your kitchen space

The kitchen is at the heart of every household. From cooking and preparing food for the family, to entertaining your friends, the kitchen is where lots of happy memories are made. However, many people wrongly assume that if you don’t have a huge kitchen area then you will struggle to get the most of the room.

From electrical appliances, to clean piles of washing, and the dirty dishes from the night before, your kitchen space can soon start to look cluttered and messy. Which is not the sort of space you want to spend time in with your friends and family. But even if your kitchen is only a small room, this doesn't mean that you still can’t get the most out of the area you have. So, here are some of our top tips on how to maximise the space in your kitchen.

Drawers are everything

First of all it is important to remember that the main purpose of your kitchen is functionality. While there are always new design trends out there that may influence the kind of kitchen you want, it is crucial that you consider functionality before anything else. Therefore, we recommend that you always go for cabinet drawers over doors, as this will help you to save space and get the most storage possible.

Drawers allow for much easier access to what you are looking for, and nobody enjoys rummaging around in the back of the cupboard when looking for a particular pan or dish. Instead, having drawers means that you can quickly grab what you need and get back to cooking up a storm.

Consider a breakfast bar

A modern kitchen trend which has grown considerably in popularity in recent years is the kitchen breakfast bar. These are a great addition to any kitchen, especially one that isn’t very big, as it provides a multi-purpose space that all the family can use. From additional worktop space, to somewhere to put the kids while you are cooking tea, a breakfast bar can quickly become the kitchen feature you didn’t know you needed.

Take advantage of the cupboard door space

If you have cupboard doors in your kitchen that are taking up much-needed space, then be sure to make the most of them. The back of cupboard doors is the perfect space to add small objects that you want quick access to, but don’t have any spare storage space. For example, from herb and spice racks, to command hooks for your dish towels and utensils, you will be surprised at how much space you can save by utilising this additional hidden storage space. As well as how much more organised it will look.

Add a shelf

In many rooms of the house we utilise shelves not only to create additional storage space, but also to add a feature and to bring an open wall to life. But when it comes to our kitchens, we don’t tend to use shelves as much. However, adding a shelf to the space is a great way to make a feature out of your extra crockery and accessories, while also providing extra storage space.

A few simple changes to your kitchen layout, design, and accessories can make a huge difference to how much you enjoy the room, and may even lead you to spend more time in there. You’ll be the next Nigella before you know it!
