Downtown Oslo - Things To Explore And Do!

The Norwegian capital of Oslo is a tremendously beautiful city that sits in the eastern region of Norway. It has a very long and fruitful history that pretty much goes back over 1,000 years. In that time, the city has developed into what we see today - a shimmering bastion of culture, history and progression. It is surely one of the wonders of Scandinavia.

Getting into the city from almost anywhere outside the country of Norway should be done via air, so most travellers pass through the Oslo Airport Gardermoen. The horseshoe city, Oslo, contains a plethora of fascinating and fun things to explore and do around the downtown area. Tourists will be kept busy for days after the sightseeing agenda has been dried up. The parks of the city centre are just one of these things that visitors could do. Frogner Park is by far the largest and most visited park in the centre of the city. Even though Bygdoy is the more renowned green space in the Oslo metropolitan area, Frogner Park is within the central city limits, standing just a few minutes on foot from the heart of Oslo. Nevertheless, more Norwegians know of Frogner, as it contains a large space for visitors, and a collection of wonderful sculptures by the famous artist; Gustav Vigeland. Another park worth visiting is the St. Hanshaugen Park in the centre of town. It sits on a hill in the centre of Oslo, boasting beautiful gardens and open spaces for everyone to enjoy. The city of Oslo contains more than 20 theatres, with most found in the central districts of Norway's capital. The Norwegian Theatre is one of the biggest, rivaled by the National Theatre. The main theatre is of course the National Theatre too, which is the symbol of Norway's actors, actresses and play-writes throughout the decades.

Shopping is an important part of the tourism culture of downtown Oslo too. There are numerous great shopping places to explore. The main shopping area is the Karl Johans Gate pedestrian mall. Even though the prices are generally expensive throughout Oslo, the streets of Bygdoy alle, Mollergata, and Torggata have some plenty of interesting shops to explore.

When it comes to things to do in Oslo's downtown area, the districts of Torggata and Karl Johan Gate are also fantastic spots. Here, the restaurants are somewhat higher in price than other areas, except for Torggata, which contains some budget restaurants to choose from.

Swimming is one thing that tourists don't usually associate with Oslo, or even Scandinavia for that matter. However, there are plenty of swimming pools opened in the city centre. Some of these are open air swimming pools, so the crowds generally die down quite significantly during the winter time. However, the summer brings heavy crowds to the pools on the weekends.

Clubbing is quite impressive in Oslo, especially for the live music scene. There are plenty of fascinating clubs and pubs to be found in the centre of the city. Again, the area of Karl Johan Gate contains many interesting establishments, some of which are gay and lesbian bars too.

For excitement beyond compare in the city of Oslo, try experiencing one of the local football games held at the Ulleval Stadium, just to the north of downtown Oslo. Both the national football side and the Tippeligaen football team play here.
