Why Should I Take a CSCS Test

Posted by Construction Helpline on February 25th, 2021

In order to get a valid CSCS card you must first pass the relevant CSCS test, or commonly known as the health, safety, and environment test. As a CSCS card proves a person’s capability to work safely and efficiently in a construction role, they must be able to pass a knowledge-based examination. Although the specific requirements to get a CSCS card mostly depend on the type of card you go for, it is a requirement that you must achieve at least a 50% score on the CSCS test.

What is a CSCS card?

A CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) card is a license that proves that a person has the appropriate training and education to carry out their work safely, and efficiently. This card was launched by the CITB: Construction Industry Training Board to enforce a high standard of safety across construction sites and construction companies. This card has now become a universal requirement for all labourer’s and construction workers. In the UK, it is very likely that you will be refused entry onto a construction site if you do not hold a valid CSCS card.

How do I prepare myself for a CSCS test?

The most important thing for you to do is thoroughly understand the information, principles and concepts surrounding health and safety. As CSCS cards aim to improve the safety of construction companies and their workers, everyone holding one must possess good theoretical and conceptual knowledge about the industry.

A good way of preparing yourself for a CSCS test is by reading books and health and safety material. Construction Helpline offers an abundance of useful revision resources which you can purchase through our site.

The CSCS Test is made up of 50 multiple choice questions that you must complete within 45 minutes. These questions are selected from the following 5 categories:

  • Working Environment
  • Occupational Health
  • Safety
  • High Risk Activities
  • Specialist Activities

The questions that will be asked will relate to real life events that occur across construction sites in the UK. If you are looking to delve into a more specialized construction role, you might have to hold specific qualifications and pass additional construction tests.

What will you learn from a CSCS test?

Acquiring regulatory laws and rules are not a priority, but you will be expected to showcase an ability to respond to dangerous circumstances and on-site accidents. The main objective of a CSCS test is for you to develop the key skills and knowledge that is required to operate on a construction site. When it comes to working at big heights with heavy tools and dangerous materials, you must possess good health and safety knowledge and practice. If construction workers do not pass a CSCS test and obtain a CSCS card, it will be difficult to maintain a safe working environment in UK’s construction industry.
