How to Make a Good Impression at your First Job

Posted by Kruti Shah on March 15th, 2021

Congratulations on your first job!! While the excitement of something extremely new might be alluring, here are some tips to make your first impression count. Till the, relax, and soothe your nerves. You won’t want to come across as clumsy and baffled on your first job.

1. Be punctual

Avoid being clumsy on time matters, whether it’s your first job or 20th. The point being, stop being late regularly and avoid blaming traffic now and then. You are a grown-up and you can easily plan and manage your schedule if you put in certain little extra efforts.

2. Communicate and smile often

Avoid being a lone wolf. It may be something as simple as a smile or introducing yourself with firm handshakes. But make your presence count. Don’t be an additional number in an already existing herd.

3. Be curious

Ask questions and let others know your interest. The first job is all about learning and as they say, you can never learn till you ask a question. There is nothing like too many questions if they are right and not too intrusive.

4. Take initiative

Don’t wait for someone to come and involve you in groups. Find your place by taking initiative. Start with immediate team members. Join them for lunch and engage in informal communication to ease the tension

5. Seek for help

It’s okay to not know everything on your first job. But what isn’t okay is to make blunders for your ignorance. Seek help from supervisors if you cannot get something right. Similarly, don’t hesitate to help an overburdened colleague by sharing some load

6. Dress smartly

As they say, dress how you wish to be addressed. Put in efforts to plan your office look every day. While your work may speak of your abilities, it is your dress play that makes a strong impression of yours.

7. Be attentive and listen

Listen to what others have to say instead of getting along in one-way conversations. Be attentive to minute details that no one would ever tell you. It is the presence of mind that counts.

8. Positive attitude

Everyone we meet and everyone we are attracted to have an energy of their own. Make sure your attitude and aura resonate positively. Work on your body language and develop traits of optimism.

You might not even remember your first job after years from now, but the attitude and habits that you develop here would shape your professional career ahead.
