Animation and VFx industry is one of India’s fastest growing industries

India’s Animation and VFx industry is growing exponentially each year. This is in tune with the global rise of this sector. Back home, the main reasons for growth is our ever deepening internet penetration and mobile usage. Apart from which, increased demand for high quality videos for movies, streaming platforms and social media websites has favoured the inclusion of Animators and VFx experts for this world-wide requirement. 

As international studios and filmmakers approach India for its creative and technical talent, the need for experienced Animation, VFx and Gaming Developers is booming. For students who choose to do a Bachelor of Design in Animation and VFx course, opportunities lie with production houses for feature films, advanced and interactive web designing, advertising and promotional videos, game design and more. Alternatively, you may also do a Bachelor’s in Science in Animation and VFX.

Established global players such as Disney, Turner Entertainment and Sony Pictures along with local production houses such as Red Chillies, Dharma Productions and Viacom 18 have been utilising the expertise of Indian animators for a long time. 

The development of Animation and VFx in India

In the late 90’s, Indian studios began adopting CG pipelines and learning the ropes in an attempt to move away from the dated 2D animation techniques. This was in order to cater to international live shows. This development took time and effort to completely manifest.

As time went by, local animation artists learnt the art of 3D and the result was the creation of numerous small and big post production companies. 

The real push has been the influx of international studios setting up operations in cities such as Hyderabad, Pune and Bangalore. This has really elevated the standard of Animation and VFx being created in our country. 

Today, students who complete their Bachelor of Design in Animation and VFX are taught all the latest 3D, Multimedia and CG techniques, towards building a globally renowned career. 

A future in Animation and VFx in India

The aptitude required to be a proficient Animation and VFx artist is a uniquely creative mind and the ability to tell a story well via imagery. It is an exciting industry that is challenging, competitive and dynamic. 

According to the latest trends, we expect the Indian Animation and VFx industry to continue growing steadily. As technology improves, student skill-sets evolve to match and the result is stunning, high definition video that can sell, entertain, transfix and influence people of all ages. 

One can choose to develop as a Layout Artist, Lighting Artist, Composition Artist or a Matte Painting Artist. It is a well paid sector and one can start off in the range of 3 to 4 lacs per annum and quickly jump to 10 to 20 lacs, depending on potential and opportunity. 

Once you have completed the chosen Animation and VFx course, and mastered the latest Animation and VFx software, you may also choose to freelance and work on a mix of different gigs for many interesting clients. 


Hence, the scope for a career in Animation and VFx is wide and can cover many specialised areas and roles. And one aspect is for sure - it is a sector that is poised to keep growing in years to come.
