Is Cosmetic Surgery Painful?

A common question we receive at Southern Aesthetic is whether plastic surgery is a painful experience, regarding either the procedure itself or the process of healing afterwards. While it is important to recognise that all surgery procedures will have a degree of pain associated with them, we have taken the utmost care to recognise and mitigate pain at every step of the cosmetic surgery journey.

For most procedures of mild to moderate complexity, local anaesthetic is used to create numbness in the affected area. After this wears off, we suggest taking pain relief medication as there can be some lingering sore spots as your body acclimates to the surgery. We usually prescribe a mixture of slow release and immediate pain medication, to give you enough comfort to move around and to have restful sleep.

As everyone’s body is different and responds to stressors in different ways, our surgeons are committed to an open dialogue about your preferences, thresholds and boundaries to ensure you are comfortable at every stage of the procedure. We endeavour to schedule regular check-ups to monitor the progression of your recovery.

Patients should not need to endure significant pain after a cosmetic procedure, and should closely follow the recommended dosages of painkillers after treatment. Over the counter medications such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatories should also be taken as required once there is no longer need for stronger medications. During this time, we suggest staying away from heavy exercise and other strenuous activities to allow your body to heal.
