Easy to Learn Sushi Menus

Use these guidelines as a guideline for gluten free sushi eating to help ensure you enjoy your new sushi dining experience as much as possible. If you enjoy sushi grade fish as much as most of us do, you'll want to occasionally dine out in a fine sushi restaurant. In addition, it is worth it to experiment with making your own special gluten-free sushi at home.

First of all, your best bet is to buy a sushi roll from a specialty store or better yet a local specialty sushi maker. It is important that the ingredients match the type of sushi rolls you order. For instance, if it is a makiwara style roll, you would most likely want to purchase a rice vinegar flavored massage, and not a kamaboko (traditional spicy Japanese rice cake) roll. Otherwise, your sushi roll might be too spicy and the wrong flavor.

Many traditional sushi rolls include kamaboko, which is spiced beef or chicken strips seasoned with ginger, wasabi, and other ingredients. It is common to also have sashimi, or fish fillet. These are usually raw fish pieces, but may have additional spicy sauces such as wasabi and spicy crab sauce. Crab is sometimes added as well as other ingredients like avocado, pickled ginger, and other items that enhance the flavor. It is not uncommon for spicy crab sauce to contain vinegar, sugar, and other items. All these ingredients may not be safe to eat, since they contain gluten.

While it is possible to enjoy sushi rolls that are made from rice, these usually contain ingredients such as edamame (in Japan), which is a soybean product that has a strong flavor. It is not uncommon to find maki (sushi rolls with depth) made with the same product. Soybeans can be very reactive, if they are not processed correctly. A great sushi chef can make any dish gluten free by using sprouted rice instead of regular white rice.

Many popular Asian dishes use soy sauce. Unfortunately, many American soy sauces do not contain gluten free since it is derived from soybeans. A good substitute is mirin (a flavorful rice wine). This type of alcohol is usually prepared from rice or vinegar, with no additives. Another great alcohol to use is sake, which is distilled from rice.

Most sushi restaurants in the United States use maki (or nigiri) rice that contains high levels of gluten. Glutens are a group of chemicals that are found in most wheat products. They are used because they improve the texture, making sushi rice more firm and moist. Many people with gluten issues have problems with maki rice because of its texture.
