Surge rating pertains to the ability of an inverter to provide enough power for certain appliances, like TVs and refrigerators, to start. Look for an inverter that can maintain a surge rating for at least five seconds.

Continuous rating pertains to the continuous amount of power without causing the inverter to shut down or overheat. The 30-minute rating is an important indication when a continuous rating is lower than the required power level of a high-energy consuming device. A 30-minute rating may be appropriate for appliances that are not used frequently.
