"The goal is to institutionalize conservation and expand science and technology research to make Sandia a leading sustainability research and development lab. The labs would be a resource for businesses, governments and institutions that want to use Sandia technology in their own sustainability efforts, the laboratory explains. Work can include collaborative research agreements, technology licensing and other partnerships.Growth is expected in areas such as alternative and renewable energies, carbon sequestration, micro and smart grids, energy and water conservation, transportation, urban planning, infrastructure, and the security of ecosystems around energy, water and food supplies. ACE USA, the U.S.-based retail operations of the ACE Group, has issued a new white paper exploring the insurance and risk management issues facing the renewable energy industry during new project development.This new report explains the importance of effective and proactive risk management strategies throughout a project lifecycle, the company says."As renewable energy sources continue to play an increasingly significant role in producing sustainable energy for the world's use, our goal is to provide risk management guidance and seamless insurance coverage throughout a project's lifecycle," says Darren Small, vice president and underwriting manager at ACE USA National Custom Casualty Energy. "This paper addresses the crucial steps in appropriately identifying, managing, controlling and transferring risk, and partnering with experts to manage emerging renewable energy risks right from the planning stage, through construction and into the operational phase," he adds.The paper also provides information on the current growth of renewable and alternative energy sources, including solar, wind and other sources. SMA Solar Technology AG has announced plans to acquire a 72.5% majority stake in Chinese inverter manufacturer Jiangsu Zeversolar New Energy Co. Ltd. SMA says it plans to use the joint venture primarily to aid comprehensive operation in the Chinese market."With this joint venture, SMA is gaining access to products specifically tailored to the unique needs of the Chinese market," says Pierre-Pascal Urbon, SMA speaker of the managing board. "As a leading manufacturer in China, Zeversolar is also in contact with the prevailing customers and decision-makers in the energy industry. We will be serving the Chinese market via the modern production site in Yangzhong and are also in a position to quickly increase capacity through already established processes."The economic start of the joint venture is planned for Jan. 1, 2013.
