Piling several gowns on the top of a baby carriage, Cheyenne Erickson, 15, stacked her chosen dresses while helping her 18-year-old cousin Rebecca Voisin pick her own.

Voisin’s “3 months, 2 weeks and 3 day”-year-old daughter, Nevaha, smiled sweetly up at them from the carriage.

“It wasn’t easy for me (to chose) because I’m picky. I originally came for a short dress but I ended up with a long one,” Erickson said, pointing to a blue, sparkling gown she decided to wear to prom.

The Junior Service League of Killeen, working with several community members and sponsors, collected more than 400 prom dresses to make high school girls “princesses for a day” and help those who needed some extra fairy dust to make it to prom.

By working with the four Killeen Independent School District high schools, the Junior Service League was able to identify 25 girls from each school to invite to the prom dress giveaway during its first hour.

After that, the event was open to any girls in the area in need, said Danielle Wachter, executive director of the event and Junior Service League of Killeen member.

The organization expected to give away most of the dresses during the day. Sponsors provided gift certificates for dry cleaning, hairstyling and photography.

“My daughter had a wedding in 2011, and the way the staff works (here), they acted as if you were at a bridal shop. They really took it to heart and realized exactly how important this is for the girls,” said Elizabeth LaBare, mother of Rebecca Voisin.

Stepping into high-heeled shoes and able to pick from accessories, first-time prom-goer Alysia Morgan said she’d tried on nine dresses in the past hour at the Lions Club Park Senior Center in Killeen.

The Copperas Cove High School junior beamed brightly while she stood in a strapless, black-and-white, ankle-length dress and declared the dress “the one.” Then, her mom walked up swiftly behind her, tugging on the back to make sure it fit. Morgan let out a long groan, but nimbly returned to smoothing the dress.
“I’m going (to prom) with my best friend,” she said. “We don’t have any plans yet.”
