The aim of acupuncture is to unblock the flow of qi or energy across meridians or channels. These studies have provided a new impetus for the field of proteomics and metabolomics. Although both these areas are too young to have been considered as branches of acupuncture, they share some similarity in core research methodology. Both of them use genetic data to screen for and identify candidate drugs for drug resistance. Acupuncture has been found to influence biological pathways involved in the regulation of inflammation and pain. This may pave the way for new medications for chronic pain and other medical ailments.
