Preventing Cavities with Sealants

When permanent teeth erupt they have many grooves, ridges, nooks and crannies that can be ideal places for decay causing bacteria to hide. One method of preventing decay from starting to begin on these areas is by placing sealants. Sealants are a special coating that are placed on molars and premolars to help fill in these plaque harboring area’s so that the decay process does not have a chance to begin. We usually recommend placing sealants as soon as the permanent teeth erupt to give them the best chance at not becoming decayed. It’s a simple, cost effective procedure and can save a lot of time, money and discomfort in the future.
The great thing about sealants is that it’s usually a pain free, comfortable, and quick process that requires no drilling. The process of applying sealants usually entails the following:
• The teeth to be sealed cleaned and dried
• A special conditioner is applied to biting surface with all the grooves to prepare the tooth
• The conditioner is washed off and air dried
• The sealant is then applied into the grooves and biting surface and then a special light is used to make it harden into place
Sealants can last a long time and at follow up dental visits we will always check to make sure they are intact. At times we may see it necessary to reapply the sealants to allow them to maintain their functionality of continuing to protect against decay.
Although sealants can play a vital role in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of teeth, it’s still very important to maintain good oral hygiene. Children should still practice good habits and brush at least twice a day and floss regularly. Starting these habits early will ensure to protect all the surfaces of teeth from decay and prevent gum disease as well throughout their life.
