To start, it's been my experience that most forum profiles allows dofollow backlinks. The dofollow attribute is vital to some people when they create backlinks. Well, the main one major downside I can think of is that because you are creating new profiles, the links will appear on new pages. This means that Google has to first find these profiles, before they can index your link. To some, this is a problem since it could take anywhere from a couple of hours to a few months just to have your backlink counted. Other's consider this a positive though, since they don't want all of their backlinks being found at once. Instead of having all of them found in one day, they are able to have their backlinks found gradually over a few weeks/months. So when it comes to forum backlinks, the big disadvantage is actually an advantage based on who you ask. In all, I am hoping this helped you to understand profile backlinks a little more.
