How do dogs get roundworms?

Most often, dogs get roundworms when they eat something that contains roundworm eggs, such as roadkill or garbage. Puppies can also contract roundworms directly from their mothers, either during the nursing stage or even while they’re developing in the womb.

What are the symptoms?

Roundworm infestations might not cause any symptoms at first. When symptoms do appear, they include things like coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, a distended stomach, and poor coat quality. In some cases, roundworms can be seen in a dog’s stool or vomit, although this isn’t always the case.

How is it treated and prevented?

Take your dog to the vet if they’re displaying the above symptoms. A dewormer medication will be prescribed if a roundworm infestation is found. The best ways to prevent a roundworm infestation are to stop your dog from eating roadkill or other foreign material that could contain roundworm eggs and to keep them on high-quality heartworm preventative.
