How to Enhance the Garage by Making It Functional?

There are several interventions you can take for garage remodeling. Although it is a space intended for short stays, it is always worth making it comfortable and optimizing its performance.

Usually, the garage is used as a single or multiple car garage, to protect cars from atmospheric agents and any theft or damage, but it can be used for other uses such as for storing motorcycles, bicycles and bulky sports equipment, or to put aside some carton.

The garage construction, therefore, depends on the use and the starting conditions, you can start with the most urgent ones and plan those that can wait more calmly.

Install a Door that is Practical

As for garage doors, today there are several solutions that make opening and closing easier. Among the most functional models are the doors with overhead opening, equipped with a mechanism with rails so that when opening the door, the door is positioned at the top, so as not to have clutter. Other models are the port side-scrolling and the folding or sectional. If, on the other hand, you want to save money, the cheapest version is the roll-up door, more commonly known as a roller shutter, which takes up little space and has a very simple operation.

For all garage doors, there are basic and insulated versions, to be installed to improve the thermal insulation of the garage.

All these doors can also be automated so that they can be managed remotely, this can also be done on doors already installed.

Replace the Floor

Stains on the floor are never welcome, not even in the garage, and when the wrong material is present, being able to remove them is a real feat. If you have decided to replace the flooring you will therefore have to select a material that has characteristics that make it easy to clean and suitable for installation in the garage such as low porosity, anti-slip properties and resistance to shocks, scratches and chemicals such as petrol and oils.

An excellent solution is a concrete floor, free of joints and paintable to make it easily washable. They also go well with porcelain tile, linoleum, rubber and PVC. The latter, if you want to work economically, can also be laid on the existing floor.

Use Tools to Tidy Up and Make Room

To make the garage functional, it is essential to optimize the space. Taking advantage of vertical surfaces by installing shelves and supports for objects on the walls allows you to save space and tidy up at the same time. This is useful for organizing work or sports equipment. For example, special wall supports can be used for bicycles. It is important if the garage is also used as a storage room to have more surface available. Having everything in its place will make space seem even larger.

Improve Insulation

Good insulation is important for any construction, including garages. If they are adjacent to a house or are located on the ground floor or in the basement, this becomes even more important to contain the energy losses of the main building.

If the room is not properly insulated and the environment is humid, not addressing this problem can cause damage to the structure, so it is advisable to intervene in time, before bad smells, mould and plaster detachment appear. Where possible, one of the various solutions available consists in the insertion of insulating material in the cavities which will make the environment more comfortable.

If You Don't Have a Car

If you don't use the garage to park your car, don't waste this space but turn it into something useful. It can be used for example as a gym or as a wine cellar. You could also think about turning it into an additional room for your home, to be used, for example, as a guest room or to be converted into a home office. In this case, however, you will have to carry out a series of works in order to convert what was a garage into a habitable environment, in compliance with current regulations. Among other things, there must be the correct aero-illuminating ratios, the necessary plant engineering and good insulation to ensure optimal living comfort.
