One of the most common questions I am asked by people who have not even heard of this political term is what is an activist? To answer their question, let us take a closer look at what an activist is. To begin with, the concept of an activist can be traced back to 1776 when Thomas Jefferson wrote, "Laws are laws that make certain people act in a specific manner or measure a particular action. They establish government by command of their legislature." The concept of making laws is not new; it is a long-established part of our history. However, the notion that making laws is the same as legislating is new. A legislature makes laws and the people submit bills for approval to the legislature. Once approved, laws are written into official documents such as laws and codes. Activists, on the other hand, engage in acts of civil disobedience and participate in various types of protests and demonstrations. How is it possible for a group to become an activist? Some groups may decide that they want to become an activist because of some issue that is affecting their community or society as a whole. For example, gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals may decide that they want to become an advocate for the rights of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. Other people may become activists because of their beliefs in fairness and equality including race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and religious beliefs. How is it possible for a group to become an activist? Activists can get together in groups and form groups to do many things including participate in political action such as speaking out against certain policies being passed by the legislature or against a particular person, company, or religion being targeted for hate crimes. It is not hard to see how it would be easy to form an opinion or belief about something that affects you and your family or friends. There are many ways to begin the process of becoming an activist.
