Acne, scientifically known as acne vulgaris is familiar amidst teenagers. Sebaceous glands present under the skin, secrete sebum that enter the surface of the skin through pores. It helps keep the skin greasy and prevents drying of the skin. Increase in sebum production is induced by increased secretion of the testosterone (hormone). During adolescence, it is secreted at high levels and along with the bacterium Propoionibacteirum acnes it results in acne. It can affect people of all ages and is characterized by oily skin resulting in whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, etc. It is caused by excess oil on the surface of the skin resulting in bacterial growth and inflammation.

The severity of acne depends on the underlying cause and can be aggravated by personal hygiene and other habits. The skin usually sheds dead cells which travel to the surface of the skin through the pores. When these dead cells mix with sebum they block the pores favoring bacterial growth into the skin. Whiteheads and blackheads are the most common forms of acne which are characterized by small bumps on the surface of skin. The bacterium may enter into the skin and form a small layer along with dead skin cells forming a red base and pus at the top. Nodules and cysts are severe forms of acne characterized by large pimples filled with pus which can be painful. Acne can also be caused by genetic defects and can be hereditary in nature. When left untreated, severe acne will lead to the formation of scars.

Proper hygiene and good exercise help prevent acne among youngsters. When found to be severe and persistent it is better to consult a dermatologist for proper treatment. Various options are available to treat acne depending on its severity. Skin cleansers such as salicylic acid, benzyl peroxide and resorcinol are helpful against whiteheads and blackheads. Female patients can take birth control pills to reduce the secretion of the male hormone testosterone, which is the precursor for increased oil secretion. Topical antibiotics are used to prevent bacterial growth on the skin. Oral antibiotics are prescribed for severe cases of acne to treat cysts and pustules. Another well known therapy is laser treatment for acne scars. It targets the sub-epidermal layer, providing uniform heating on the cells. Several centers in Bangalore provide laser treatment for acne scars. Radiance Medispas is one of the luxury skin clinics providing state-of-the-art laser treatment in Bangalore.
