Get a Better Night?s Sleep with a Natural Latex Mattress

Are you looking for a natural or non-synthetic mattress that will serve your holistic, orthopedic and environmental needs?

The Resilient Reach of Natural Latex

Latex is made from a milky tree-sap called Hevea. Until nineteen-seventy-two, Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon, and this is where the 1st rubber plantation bounced into existence. Commercialized by Great Britain late in the nineteenth century, the applications of latex rubber were slow to catch on, but by the dawn of the twentieth century, a significant portion of Sri Lanka’s was thriving with rubber plantations. Currently, the nation has well over three hundred acres of cultivated rubber trees, with a rate of production that exceeds one hundred and twenty million kilograms each year. Rubber is one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable assets and one of its most valuable exports.

Although most conventional mattresses are totally synthetic, some companies sell mattresses that have a thin layer of latex on top, which allows the illusion of marketing these mattresses as “natural”. However, a mattress that is completely made of latex provides the added benefits of being antibacterial and hypoallergenic, since rubber latex is naturally resistant to mites, mold and various types of bacteria. And if you add a wool or cotton cover over a breathing mattress made of latex, they easily absorb perspiration and minimize body odor. Because of its biochemical makeup, latex also provides a natural barrier to fire. If you are someone who wants to avoid the health-hazards of synthetic chemicals and toxic materials and prefers, instead, to live in harmony with Nature, it is probably good to consider some type of natural sleep platform , bedding and non-toxic furniture.

The Sturdy Support of Solid Wood

It would seem like a contradiction in terms to lay an organic latex mattress on top of a metal frame and an unnatural box-spring. Doesn’t it make more sense to bring a latex mattress together with a platform bed constructed of solid wood? Bamboo platform beds in particular are becoming more and more popular since bamboo is plentiful, renewable and affordable, and yet any type of warm wood is preferable to cold steel and an artificial box full of springs. Some platform beds are so easy to assemble that you don’t even need any tools. For example, the Raku platform bed offered by Haiku Designs fits together like a simple children’s puzzle, and whether you choose to use wooden slats or tatami mats to support the mattress, either choice is easily placed within the bed frame.
