How Do Swim Diapers Work?

You shouldn’t let little ones hold you back from enjoying the water this summer. That’s what swim diapers are for! Not familiar with them? Here’s the lowdown.

What are swim diapers?

Swim diapers are diapers for babies and toddlers that are designed to be worn in the pool, at the splash pad or at any other water feature. If your little one isn’t potty trained but you want to take him or her to the pool or splash pad, you’ll need a swim diaper to have a successful outing. They are designed to withstand water and contain solids. On the flip side, regular diapers are not. Instead, if you put your child in a regular diaper at the pool, the diaper will soak up all the water, leaving your child waterlogged by a giant diaper that slides off their bottom every five seconds. (Not very comfortable for them or ideal for you.)

Do swim diapers keep pee and poop out of the pool?

Naturally, you might also be concerned about how to handle accidents while you’re at the pool with your little one. Luckily, a swim diaper will help with that too. When your child wears a swim diaper, any poop will be contained inside the diaper. However, since a swim diaper isn’t designed to absorb liquids (in fact, it’s designed to do the opposite), pee will pass through to the water.

At what age is a swim diaper appropriate?

Younger babies (like newborns) still don’t produce very solid poop. Most often, it’s more of a liquid since they are consuming only breast milk or formula. As a result, a swim diaper won’t be able to contain newborn poop, which could end up being a disaster if your baby has a blowout while in the pool. Yikes.

Likewise, kids of any age who have diarrhea should not swim in a public pool. The diarrhea-causing germs could leak into the water and contaminate it. If you need to buy swim diapers, visit this website.

Once your baby is old enough to produce solid poop, swim diapers are perfect! Just make sure to change them often when out at the beach or pool, and do it far away from the poolside to prevent any contamination of the water or poolside area.
