Joining a gym is a good first step to a healthier and fitter you. With a good amount of pre-planning, personal reflection, goal-setting, and online research, you will sure find a good facility that is worth investing your time, money, and energy in. Once you have all your training goals set, it shouldn't be difficult to find a facility that can satisfy your needs. Your friends' recommendations are great places to start, but be sure to consider a few more factors that are essential to your fitness journey:

•    The facility's location. Choosing a gym located on the other side of the town may be counterproductive. Ask yourself, will you really make the effort to travel that for to do your workout? A good rule of thumb to follow is to find a facility that is located somewhere between your place of work (or your school) and your home. This will give you added motivation to visit the facility even when you are crunched for time.

•    The facility's hours. Find a facility that has flexible hours, or at least schedules that you can comfortably work around, given your busy daily routine. Many gyms nowadays operate 24/7, but if the gym you are considering doesn't offer this option, make sure that their hours comfortably coincide with your own personal schedule. Don't start paying for a facility that you can't access.

•    The facility's membership. Different people respond differently to the stimuli around them. Keep this in mind when you are selecting a facility. Remember that being relaxed in your workout environment plays a huge part in your comfort and performance as you do your workout. Some gyms may be co-ed while others only cater to same sex patrons. Others still, attract certain age groups. Find a facility whose membership is one that you can be comfortable mingling with as you go through your workout sessions.

•    The facility's staff. Pick a gym that has supportive, courteous, skilled, and kind staff and crew members who are always ready to answer your questions or give you training tips when you need them. Gym staff do more than spot you on machines, as they are also there to help you maximize the effects of your workouts. Choose a gym with trained and skilled crew members and preferably ones that are qualified to help you through your personal fitness routine. Ask about their professional trainer rates, if you need one.
