Sushi Gluten Free

Posted by sushigeft on July 6th, 2021

Almost all traditional sushi and sushi rolls are gluten free. There are some exceptions of certain ingredients used in the sushi rolls as not being gluten free, but all sushi grade fish and sushi rolls made with raw ingredients whether fish, vegetable or fruit are gluten free.

Spicy tuna, spicy salmon, spicy crab and the likes are a bit tricky, since most spicy rolls have crunch mixed into them (tempura flakes) they are not gluten free, but the other ingredients are since they are just the main ingredient and spicy mayo. Although depending on the preparation of the spicy mayo, Japanese mayo on its own is gluten free, but some of the spices added might not be. If you have a severe reaction to gluten you should stay away, but most people can ask for the rolls to be made without crunch and they should be ok.

As you may have guessed, tempeh is another ingredient used in many sushi rolls and is not always a healthy alternative to meat. If you are dining at a place where tempeh is used, inquire about the source of the temple. If it is sourced from an organic farm, the chef may be able to source it for you and ensure that it is safe for you to eat. If you are eating a tempeh roll which is made from crab meat, you will also want to be on the lookout for signs of contamination such as redness, odd texture, or if the center seems to be hard.

Eating sushi gluten free is simple when you know what to look for. Before you dine out, check your particular local dining establishments to see if they have any items on their menus which may have gluten or other allergens in them. There are many vegetarian restaurants in every city, but be sure to ask your health conscious friends where they go for lunch and dinner. After all, it is not easy being a vegetarian when dining out with non-vegetarians, so always take precautions to prevent any allergy issues.
