Non destructive testing (NDT) is a hands-on testing method typically employed to determine integrity, reliability, quality and properties of different components and systems. Extensively used in a number of industries, this testing method allows a thorough inspection of different components without destructing and/or alternating their reliability. NDT, in its broad term, is a set of typical analysis techniques applicable in a variety of machinery and piping equipment used in power plants, off-shore, refineries, shipbuilding, aviation and nuclear plants. NDT testing can also be used to detect composition and manufacturing defects of metal components.

Quality inspectors have become ever more reliant on NDT techniques to assess the properties of different components. However, the success of non destructive testing adequately depends on the choice of method NDT inspectors use to examine a particular component. Some of the most commonly used NDT techniques include Eddy Current Testing (ET), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Visual Testing (VT) and Digital Radiography/Radioscopy (RTR).

Quality inspection requires the use of different testing methods, depending on the type of component being tested. However, not all quality analysis techniques are suitable to evaluate the quality of every component or system. The sort of analysis technique being employed determines the success of the test. NDT inspectors use their extensive knowledge, skills and professional expertise to successfully perform different analysis techniques. Becoming an independent NDT inspector requires possessing substantial knowledge of different NDT methods. Inspectors must also possess qualification and certification as per the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) standards.

NDT inspectors are responsible for interpretation, detection and evaluation of different industrial components. Various organizations hire qualified NDT inspectors to efficiently perform quality analysis. If you want to give your career new wings, join a non destructive testing school to get ASNT certification. This certification program is structured to adhere to ASNT SNT-TC-1A, CP -189 standards. The entire training program can be divided into Level I & II. Level I training include written practices for visual & optical testing. Level II is recommended to those who have successfully completed Level I training. It covers an in depth knowledge of visual and optical techniques, mechanical & optical tools, interpretation and evaluation of various product discontinuities. As per the requirements of ASNT SNT-TC-1A 2011, candidates must qualify examinations in General theory, Specification and Practical with a minimum of 70% grading in each to claim the certification.
