Causes of Sexual Transmitted Diseases

Sexual Transmitted Diseases are also known as Venereal diseases.

STDs are caused due to the infection of bacteria, virus or protozoans.

Chlamydia:
Regarded as one of the most common STDs.

Chlamydia infection is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

It is generally found in the genital region and in the eyes.

If left untreated, it may lead to pelvic pain and painful sexual intercourse.

Trichomoniasis:
Protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of this disease.

Although commonly found in women, it also causes infection in males.

Molluscum Contagiosum:
This is a type of viral infection and caused by the Molluscum Contagiosum Virus (MCV).

Four strains of the virus are found i.e. MCV-1, MCV-2, MCV-3, and MCV-4, the most common being MCV-1.

If the infection occurs in young children, the condition is not categorized as STD.

Chancroid:
This STD is spread only through sexual contact.

The causative agent is Haemophilus ducreyi bacteria.

It is characterized by the presence of painful sores.

Genital Herpes:
Herpes is caused due to the herpes simplex virus.

This STD generally affects the genitals and cervix.

It is a non-curable chronic condition and the virus resides in the body in the dormant stage.

HPV (Human papillomavirus):
Human Papillomavirus infection is spread through genital contact, oral anal or vaginal sex.
