Buying Antique Oriental Rugs: Tips and Tricks

Posted by eliteinternet on September 3rd, 2021

People like statement pieces in their homes. Whether they opt for a loud couch, dramatic mantels, cozy fireplaces, or beautiful antique or Oriental rugs is a personal preference. Our money is on the antique and Oriental rugs, however. They are a beautiful option.

Persian rugs, for example, are impeccable. On the other hand, a dazzling Turkish kilim might wow guests as they cross the threshold into your home. Antique rugs in particular hold charm for many who love the touch of yesteryear below their feet.

Such rugs come with a price, though. For instance, sometimes the edges of the floor covering are frayed. Some of these almost-perfect antique rugs have stains. Either way, these small defects aren’t a reason to throw away the whole rug. Most can be saved by a professional.

Now, some sellers will try to take advantage of buyers who don’t know their way around the antique and Oriental rug industry. Rather than get taken for a ride, one should refer to a professional or visit a showroom. In these cases, the sellers are generally trustworthy!

Another tip to consider is to examine the coloring on the rug. Some faded rugs will never be restored to their like-new condition. In some settings, this makes for an even more attractive effect. In others, though, the rug looks faded and damaged. Be wise in your decision.

Ask about how the coloring was done as well! Many rugs are tinted and dyed using natural products like pecan shells. You might just learn something new.

Finally, be informed about the required upkeep, care, and cleaning required for the rug in mind. Some rugs just need to be vacuumed (especially cheap and commercial ones). Others will require specialized care. This is more common with antique Oriental rugs.

Although some home cleaning experts say that a solution of 1:6 vinegar-water can be used to clean some small spots, relying on a certified or licensed professional is better advised.

Cleaning Oriental rugs correctly is both a science and an artform. The best vendors know not only how to sell rugs but also how to care for them with a gentle but thorough cleaning.
