Have a theme

You have to make the atmosphere of the party. Make up a theme, it could be anything from space to artistic. It's good to think out of the box and away from the classic themes like winter wonderland or disco party. It's also a good idea to think of a theme that can be interpreted in many different ways. So it brings out the creativeness in your guests and you. That way it will be exciting for everyone. It's also a good way to have people loosen up if they don't know each other and if they have to dress according to the theme it's an instant conversation starter.

Decorate

Don't just have a plain party. Decorate the place to make a real impression and to have your guests really get in to the spirit as soon as they come through the door. You also don't need to have a huge budget or spend a lot of time. If you spend a little time planning the decorations and you use your imagination, you can create easy and memorable decorations. They will even leave more of an impression if you do that because it gives your guests a personal feeling.

Food and drink

Obviously the most important part. If you do nothing else on this list, this is mandatory. Even if it's a bring your own booze party guests need to be informed at least. Usually though you are responsible of making sure your guests are well fed and ''hydrated''. It's best if you can make some easy snack at home to make your guests happy. They will appreciate the effort. But most people don't have the time to do everything by themselves so the best solution is to have some store bought snacks along with some home made ones. If you're really trying to impress make your guests a proper diner. Make sure to buy enough alcohol and don't forget t stock up on non-alcoholic drinks as well.

Plan activities

If your guests don't know each other that well you can plan some fun activities to break the ice. Don't make them too forceful or awkward though. A lot of people don't like that and it leaves them annoyed at the start rather than relaxed and loosened up. For later on when your guess are more at ease and are having fun you can whip out some more active games. If the party is the right type add some drinking games. You can even have a real beer pong table to keep your guests entertained.

Have fun

Don't forget that you're supposed to have fun as well. Don’t get too caught up in everything going perfectly. If you’ve prepared well you need to let go at some point and just trust that people will take care of themselves. It’s your party as well and you’ll only be making your guests uncomfortable if you fuss over them too much and don’t relax yourself.
