Boiler Problems and Their Fixes

Boiler problems cause a major inconvenience as it stops the supply of hot water and heating services. It becomes critical to get a boiler fix done immediately, especially in winters when boilers need to work at their full capacity. Most boilers face a few common problems; while some of them can easily be fixed by the engineer at a small repair cost, some boiler fix issues may cost more or may even be irreparable.

• Leakage

This is one of the most common boiler problems and is usually because of a component, such as a pump seal or the pressure valve. If the leak is in the pressure relief valve, it may be due to an increase in the system’s pressure. When the pump seal is worn out, it can also become the cause of a leak. Corrosion in the system’s pipes also causes a leak. These parts can be replaced by an engineer.

• No hot water or heating

Problems such as broken system diaphragms and airlocks, faulty motorized valves, low pressure or a broken thermostat can cause this issue. The simple boiler fix for this problem is checking the pressure gauge. If it is below 1, it needs to be re-pressurized at 1.5. In case of a faulty component like a thermostat, it can be replaced by an engineer. 

• Thermostat issues

If the boiler is not responding to the thermostat, either the controls are broken or the batteries need to be replaced. Another boiler fix for this issue is positioning the thermostat closer to the boiler and checking for any interference that may be affecting the performance of the thermostat.

• Unusual sounds from the boiler

If the boiler makes gurgling, whistling, or banging sounds, it could be because of a faulty pump, low water pressure, air in the system, or a build-up of limescale, also known as kettling.

 It is advisable to contact an engineer for a boiler fix.
