How Does Our Indoor Positioning System Work?

We have a location positioning system that is small enough to fit into a pocket and can be used indoors. The device can be used in several navigations, gaming, or augmented reality applications. Our project aims at providing a low-cost and simple-to-use indoor navigation system. The prototype is based on the 802.15.4 wireless personal area network protocol, which provides basic connectivity between nodes. Our platform would provide an accurate indoor positioning service for mobile devices at a low cost. While GPS cannot be used indoors, the UWB technology may solve this problem by using a low-cost ad hoc network of transmitters.

We have developed a wireless Indoor Positioning System. It is a device that can be used for tracking the position of persons or objects inside a building in real-time. The system consists of many small Bluetooth beacons placed in the room, where they send out signals with their ID and location (this is called Broadcast Mode). Nearby devices receive these signals and report them to the UbiTrack server. The server calculates the device’s location using a special algorithm based on these reports. It sends this information back to the device, where it can be used by other applications running on it (this is called Tracking Mode).
